English Wide Reading V1 – Bibliography

Written By Chris Kyle

This book is about a Texan cowboy, Chris Kyle, who decided to go to college but his dream was to be in the military. His intention was to finish college then sign up. However, due to the 9/11 tragedy he signed up and joined the U.S. marines immediately. He later became a special forces Navy SEAL (Sea Air and Land). This book goes into his best experiences and some of the worst experiences anyone could have ever imagined possible.

A character I found interesting was the main character Chris Kyle. Kyle was interesting because he’s the kind of guy to stand between a fight, and start one if necessary. He came across as being a very loyal friend, someone who would always have your back. His philosophy was to be prepared for a fight but to also know when to live to fight another day. He was known to say, “Great way to fight a war – be prepared to defend yourself for winning.”

Chris was very decisive in many situations that were a matter of life and death, that could ultimately have got his team killed if he made the wrong choice in a sticky situation. He knew when to back down from a fight, retreat if necessary. But when he knew his team had a chance, he pushed on and led them to victory in many major battles. But not every fight was a victory, as every major battle finishes, each side has its casualties.

One of the messages I got from his bibliography was that you have to decide if you want to live a normal life. Because when you come back from war you can’t expect to be the same as you once were. The things you would have seen, the things you might have done, wars leave scars, some you can’t see.

One of the many challenges Chris faced, was the death of his fellow team member Ryan Job, aka Biggles. Ryan died from an overdose of medication two years after he was shot in battle. When Chris heard about this he took all the blame, he felt like he could have done something to prevent the death of his best friend. “My regrets are about the people I couldn’t save – Marines, soldiers, my buddies. I still feel their loss. I still ache for my failure to protect them.” Chris ached to protect everyone which is unrealistic and why he had so much trouble accepting that fact. I know that no one can protect everyone. And Chris suffered because of his belief that he could. It makes me feel powerless when I can’t protect people I love harm and pain.

I believe that the title American Sniper appropriately describes this incredible true story about Chris Kyle’s experiences in Fallujah, Iraq. And his service for the American military as a sniper for three tours. It is appropriate because It was who he was. This made me feel sick to my stomach. Biggles was a friend, a husband, a son, a father. And a great war hero who didn’t deserve to die the way he did nor die at all. When I read this novel it made me realize war is a terrible thing and no one should be a part of, as it destroys you, not only on the outside but on the inside as well.

I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to join the military as this is definitely an emotional story that shows you the true reality of what war is and what it means to be a part of.
